Tough, yet precise
Thales Tracs make tracking systems for a range of applications. These range from locating a ship in distress to guiding a field engineer to a precise grid reference with an accuracy of a few centimetres.
The design
The Thales Tracs-Lite is sealed to IP69 in a robust ABS housing. The unit is capable of submersion for an hour at a depth of 1 metre. Conductive elastomeric seals between the casing halves exclude moisture and complete the internal EMC shielding circuit.
Heat generated by the powerful electronics is dissipated by a heat sink which is bonded into the casing.
The challenge
Thales required a design for their multi-purpose tracking and positioning device. Housing satellite and radio beacon communications, the tracker needed to be mountable to ship bridge or vehicle control panels and carried in a field operative's backpack.
